Procedure

Ethynylmagnesium bromide (11.2 mmol) in tetrahydrofuran (20 cm3) was added dropwise to a stirred solution of 3-benzoylbenzaldehyde (2 g, 9.5 mmol, prepared as in Example 3(b) in tetrahydrofuran (30 cm3) through which purified acetylene was being passed. After 2 hours, saturated ammonium chloride solution (200 cm3) was added, and the mixture extracted with ether (3×50 cm3). The combined extracts were washed with saturated sodium chloride, dried over anhydrous sodium sulphate, and the solvent removed in vacuo. The product was purified by thin layer chromatography on silica to give the title alcohol, yield 1.1 g (49%) nD20 1.6075.
