Procedure
A solution of 3-formyl-4(1H)-quinolone (6 g) from Example 33 and malonic acid (18 g) in pyridine (300 ml) was heated on a steam bath for four hours. The reaction mixture was then evaporated down and the residue washed thoroughly with water. Recrystallisation from DMF/H2O gave the title compound, m.p. 242°-244° C.
