To a stirred solution of 2-((S)-1-(8-chloro-2-(1,2-dihydroxyethyl)quinolin-3-yl)-ethyl)isoindoline-1,3-dione (170 mg, 0.43 mmol) in THF (4.0 mL) and water (1.0 mL) was added sodium periodate (91.6 mg, 0.43 mmol). The reaction was stirred at room temperature for 3 hours and then it was diluted with water (50 mL). The separated aqueous layer was extracted with DCM (2×50 mL) and the combined organic layers were washed with brine (50 mL), dried (MgSO4), filtered and evaporated in vacuo to give (S)-8-chloro-3-(1-(1,3-dioxoisoindolin-2-yl)ethyl)-quinoline-2-carbaldehyde. 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) δ ppm 10.36 (1H, s), 8.59 (1H, s), 7.89-7.91 (1H, m), 7.82-7.86 (3H, m), 7.71-7.73 (2H, m), 7.57-7.61 (1H, m), 6.67 (1H, q, J=7.0 Hz), 2.00 (3H, d, J=7.0 Hz).
