Procedure
To a suspension of 1-(4-chloro-2-methylphenyl)hydrazine as the hydrochloride salt (96 mg, 0.5 mmol) in Et2O (10 mL) was added a 2 N solution of LiOH (3 mL), and the resulting mixture was stirred for 15 minutes. After the system became homogenous, furan-2-carbonyl chloride was added, and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 30 minutes. The reaction mixture was then diluted with water (100 mL) and extracted with EtOAc (70 mL). The organic layer was separated, washed with brine, and dried over Na2SO4. The crude material of N′-(4-chloro-2-methylphenyl)furan-2-carbohydrazide obtained after the removal of the solvent was used in the next step without further purification.
