20.0 g of acetophenone is reacted with 18.7 g of diisopropylamine and 40 ml of water solution of formaldehyde in presence of 20 ml of conc. HCl in 360 ml of methanol for 2 hours at reflux temperature. After evaporation of most of methanol water and ethylacetate is added. After separation the organic phase was concentrated by evaporation and diluted with methanol. The dissolved compound is reduced with 4.2 g of sodium borohydride to yield 3-hydroxy-N,N-diisopropyl-3-phenylpropan-1-amine which may be converted into N,N-diisopropyl-3-phenylpropyl-2-ene-1-amine by treating with strong alkali.
