Procedure

A mixture of 4-ethenyl-2-fluoro-3-methylbenzonitrile (4.60 g, 28.5 mmol) and mCPBA (85%, 12.3 g, 71.4 mmol) in 300 mL of DCM was stirred at room temperature for 120 hours. The reaction mixture was cooled to 0° C. and was washed subsequently with saturated NaHCO3 (50 mL), saturated Na2SO3 (50 mL), 5% NaOH (2×50 mL) and brine (50 mL), dried over anhydrous Na2SO4 and concentrated. The residue was purified by column chromatography (petrol ether:EtOAc=20:1) to afford the title compound: 1H-NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) δ ppm 7.36-7.39 (m, 1H), 7.04-7.06 (m, 1H), 3.92-3.94 (m, 1H), 3.15-3.17 (m, 1H), 2.57-2.59 (m, 1H), 2.30 (d, J=2.0 Hz, 3H).
