Procedure
A mixture of tert-butyl {6-[(2,2-dimethylpropanoyl)amino]-4-(2-hydroxyethyl)pyridin-3-yl}acetate (2.30 g, 6.84 mmol) with imidazole (0.558 g, 8.20 mmol) in dichloromethane (50 mL) was treated with triphenylphosphine (1.79 g, 6.84 mmol) and carbon tetrabromide (2.72 g, 8.20 mmol). The reaction mixture was allowed to stir at room temperature for 2 h, then was diluted with water and the layers separated. The organic layer was washed successively with 5% hydrochloric acid, saturated sodium bicarbonate solution, and brine, then dried (Na2SO4), filtered and concentrated. The residue was filtered through a short silica plug (20% EtOAc:hexanes eluent) to afford the title compound which was used immediately in the next step: LC/MS (M+1)+=398.9.
