Procedure

The crude benzyl alcohol was stirred with a solution of potassium hydroxide (800 mg, 14.4 mmol) in DMSO (8 mL). Iodoethane (580 mL, 7.2 mmol) was added, and the reaction stirred for 16 h before it was diluted with H2O (30 mL) and extracted with ether (2×30 mL). Organics were washed with brine (20 mL), dried (Na2SO4) and concentrated in vacuo. Purification by silica gel chromatography (15% EtOAc/hexanes) gave 1.30 g (92%) of the title compound as a clear oil. 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3) δ 7.29 (s, 1H), 7.03 (s, 1H), 5.26 (s, 2H), 4.48 (s, 2H), 3.85 (s, 3H), 3.79 (t, 2H, J=8.4 Hz), 3.58 (q, 2H, J=6.9 Hz), 1.26 (t, 3H, J=6.9 Hz), 0.95 (t, 2H, J=8.4 Hz), −0.01 (s, 9H).
