155 mg (0.315 mmol) of 5-[4-(5-fluoro-2-methoxyphenyl)-2-hydroxy-4-methyl-2-(trifluoromethyl)pentylidenamino]quinoline-2-carboxylic acid methylamide is dissolved in 10 ml of ethanol and mixed with 0.09 ml (0.4 mmol) of titanium tetraethylate as well as 94 mg (2.6 mmol) of sodium borohydride. The reaction is halted after 5 hours by adding saturated sodium chloride solution and ethyl acetate. Insoluble components are filtered. The filtrate is extracted with ethyl acetate, the combined organic phases are dried on sodium sulfate, and the solvent is removed in a vacuum. After chromatography on silica gel with hexane-ethyl acetate (0-50%), 110 mg (71% of theory) of the product is obtained.
