To a solution of 5-nitro-3-phenyl-1H-indazole (1.0 g, 4.2 mmol) in ethyl acetate (80 mL) was added palladium on activated carbon (Pd/carbon) then the reaction was subjected to an atmosphere of hydrogen. The reaction was stirred for 3 days when the Pd/carbon was filtered off and the solution concentrated to an oil under vacuo. The oil was then taken up in H2SO4 (6 mL) and water (60 mL) and the suspension was heated in a bomb to 180° C. for 2 days. The reaction was then cooled to room temperature, quenched with NaHCO3 (100 mL) and extracted with ethyl acetate (3×30 mL). The organic layers were combined and dried (Na2SO4) and concentrated to recover the title compound (250mg, 28% yield). 1H NMR (CDCl3) δ 13.0 (s, 1H), 9.20 (s, 1H), 7.91 (s, 1H), 7.88 (s, 1H), 7.50 (t, 2H), 7.41 (d, 1H), 7.36 (t, 1H), 7.28 (s, 1H), 6.96 (dd, 1H); ES-MS (m/z) 195 [M+1]−.
