To a stirred solution of methyl 4-iodo-3-methoxy-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-2-naphthalenecarboxylate (3.0 g, 8.67 mmol) in THF (12 mL) and H2O (4 mL) was added 10N NaOH (9 mL). Methanol was added dropwise until the cloudy solution became clear. After stirring overnight at room temperature, the THF was removed in vacuo. The aqueous solution was acidified to pH 2 with 1N HCl and resulting white precipitate was extracted with DCM (3×25 mL). The combined organic extracts were dried (Na2SO4), filtered and concentrated in vacuo to afford a light brown solid (2.8 g, 100%). 1H NMR (CDCl3) δ 7.83 (s, 1H), 3.92 (s, 3H), 2.77 (m, 4H), 1.78 (m, 4H). MS m/z 331 (M−H).
