To a solution of 3-(1-cyano-1-methylethyl)-N-[3-(4-nitrophenoxy)phenyl]benzamide (8.10 g, 20.2 mmol) in tetrahydrofuran (50 mL) and methanol (50 mL) was added 10% palladium-carbon (555 mg), and the mixture was stirred under a hydrogen atmosphere (2.5 atm) at room temperature for 14 hr. The insoluble material was filtered off, and the filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure to give the title compound (7.34 g, 98%) as a pale-gray amorphous substance. The obtained compound was used in the next reaction without a further purification.
