Procedure

A mixture of 125 mg of 7-chloro-4-hydroxy-2-oxo-2H-chromene-3-carboxylic acid methyl ester (0.5 mmol), 534 mg of L-alanine (6 mmol), and 270 mg of sodium methoxide (5 mmol) in 8 mL of 2-methoxyethanol was heated at reflux for 18 hours. The mixture was cooled and acidified with 20 mL of 1 N HCl to precipitate a white solid. The solid was collected on a glass fitted filter, washed twice with water, and dried under vacuum to 129 mg of a white solid. MS: (+) m/z 313.96/311.95 (M+1, 35/37Cl)
