Procedure
1.0 g ethyl 2-[(2-methyl-5-nitrophenyl)amino]-4-(3-pyridinyl)pyrimidine-5-carboxylate and 0.8 g sodium carbonate in 20 mL ethanol and 4 mL water is suspended. The mixture is refluxed for 4 hours by distillating the ethanol and compensating with water the volume loss. The mixture is cooled at room temperature, and the precipitate is filtrated, yielding 0.84 g of product.
