Procedure

To a solution of the hydroxy-phenyl-acetic acid 2,5-dioxo-pyrrolidin-1-yl ester (0.70 g, 2.8 mmol) in THF/H2O (10 mL, 1:1) was added diethylamine (25% in H2O, 0.58 mL, 5.6 mmol). After stirring for 16 h, the reaction solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure. The resulting residue was diluted with H2O and extracted with EtOAc (3×50 mL). The organic extracts were combined, dried (Na2SO4), and the solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure to yield the title compound.
