A mixture of 49.6 g (0.4 mol) of 2-hydroxymethyl-phenol and 124 g (2 mol) of ethylmercaptan was heated for 5 hours to 170° C. in a stirred autoclave. Working up as in Example 1 gave 32.2 g (96% of theory) of 2-ethylthiomethyl-phenol.
