(2R)-amino(2,3-dihydro-1H-inden-2-yl)ethanoic acid (1.91 g, 10 mmol) was suspended in dioxane (10 ml) and water (10 ml). To this was added triethylamine (1.7 ml) and N-(benzyloxycarbonyloxy)-succinimide (2.54 g) and the reaction mixture was stirred rapidly at room temperature for 2 days. The reaction mixture was poured into water (50 ml) and extracted with chloroform (100 ml). The organic phase was washed with 1N hydrochloric acid (50 ml) and water (50 ml). This was dried over magnesium sulphate and the solvent removed in vacuo to give the title compound (3.06 g, 94%):
