Procedure

Methyl ester 11a (HU-911) 0.103 g (0.233 mmol) and LiOH 0.111 g (4.66 mmol) in 2 ml of MeOH/H2O 3:1 were heated at 200° C. over 48 hrs in a screwed vial under air atmosphere. Water was added to the reaction mixture and extracted several times with ether. Organic phases were collected, dried over MgSO4 and concentrated in vacuo. The product was purified by preparative TLC (hexane/ethyl acetate) to give yellow solid 0.026 g (26%). mp 101-102° C.; 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3) δ ppm 6.46 (s, 2H), 6.32 (d, J=3.40 Hz, 1H), 3.71 (s, 6H), 2.46 (t, J=3.44 Hz, 1H), 2.38-2.44 (m, 1H), 1.80-2.03 (m, 1H), 1.53-1.58 (m, 2H), 1.26 (s, 6H), 1.16-1.24 (m, 7H), 1.14 (s, 3H), 1.03-1.12 (m, 3H), 1.00 (s, 3H), 0.85 (t, J=6.74 Hz, 3H). Exact mass calculated for C28H42O4 m/e 428.29. found 428.98. Anal. calcd. for C28H42O4: C, 75.66; H, 9.41. Found: C, 75.50; H, 9.48.
