Procedure

Trifluoroacetic acid (0.6 mL, 7.8 mmol) was added drop-wise to a solution of tert-butyl 2-cyano-4-isopropoxybenzoate (82 mg, 0.31 mmol) in dichloromethane (0.6 mL) at 0° C. under N2 atmosphere. After the addition was complete, the cooling bath was removed and stirring was continued for an additional 2 h at 25° C. The solvent was removed under reduced pressure to yield 2-cyano-4-isopropoxybenzoic acid that was used directly in the next step without further purification.
