To a solution of methyl 4-(2-methoxy-2-oxo-1-phenylethylamino)-3-nitrobenzoate (350 mg, 1.02 mmol, 1.00 equiv) in MeOH (10 mL) was added Fe (280 mg, 5.00 mmol, 5.00 equiv) and saturated NH4Cl (3 mL), and the resulting solution was allowed to react, with stifling, for 2 hrs while the temperature was maintained at reflux in an oil bath. The solids were collected by filtration and discarded. The resulting solution was concentrated under vacuum giving 0.8 g (crude) of methyl 3-oxo-2-phenyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoxaline-6-carboxylate as a yellow solid.
