Procedure
Into a 50-mL round-bottom flask, was placed a solution of 3-(pyridin-4-yl)benzaldehyde from Example 1 Step 1 (2 g, 10.9 mmol, 1 equiv) in DMF/AcOH (20/2 mL), aniline (1.02 g, 11.0 mmol, 1 equiv) and NaBH3CN (2.62 g, 41.6 mmol, 4 equiv). The resulting solution was stirred 2 h at 110° C. The reaction was then quenched by the addition of 30 mL of water. The resulting solution was extracted with 30 mL of ethyl acetate, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated under vacuum. The residue was purified by column chromatography on silica gel (eluting with 1:1 ethyl acetate/petroleum ether) to give N-(3-(pyridin-4-yl)benzyl)benzenamine as light yellow oil.
