Procedure
To a solution of cyclopentanamine (175 g) in water (150 mL) was added 3-oxopentanedioic acid (30 g) at 20° C. or lower, 2-chloroacetaldehyde (40% aqueous solution, 43 mL) was added dropwise thereto at 10° C. or lower, and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 14 hr. 6N Hydrochloric acid (150 mL) was added thereto at 0° C., and the black precipitate was removed by filtration. To the filtrate was added 6N hydrochloric acid (50 mL) at 0° C., and the precipitate was collected by filtration to give the title compound (40 g).
