2-amino-6-methyl-4-oxo-4H-pyran-3-carbonitrile from above was dissolved in 4 N HCl/H2O (2500 ml) and refluxed for 5 h with stirring strongly. After cooled to r.t., the precipitate was filtered, washed with H2O (500 ml), ethanol (500 ml) and MTBE (200 ml) and dried under high vacuum. 2,4-dihydroxy-6-methylnicotinonitrile was obtained as a yellow powder. (165 g, yield 66%).
