Procedure
To a solution of 5-bromo-2-methyl-3-nitrobenzoic acid (5.5 g, 21 mmol) in DMF (42 ml) under nitrogen, was added Na2CO3 (3.4 g, 32 mmol) followed by iodomethane (2.0 ml, 32 mmol). The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 2 hours. The mixture was diluted with deionized water (150 ml) and extracted with EtOAc (4×50 ml). The combined organic phases were washed with saturated NaHCO3(aq) (2×50 ml), dried over MgSO4, filtered and concentrated in-vacuo to give the title compound (6.3 g, 61%) as a yellow oil. 1H NMR (500 MHz, Chloroform-d) δ ppm 7.38 (d, J=2.05 Hz, 1H) 7.23 (d, J=2.05 Hz, 1H) 3.20 (s, 3H) 1.82 (s, 3H).
