Procedure
To a stirred solution of 5-chloro-2-methylbenzoic acid (4.0 g, 24 mmol) in concentrated H2SO4 (27 mL) at −10° C. was added a nitrating solution comprised of concentrated HNO3 (3.3 g, 53 mmol) dissolved in concentrated H2SO4 (4.4 mL). The resulting mixture was stirred at −10° C. for 3 h and poured onto ice water. The resulting precipitate was filtered, washed with water and dried under vacuum to give the title compound (4.95 g, 99%).
