Procedure
270.8 g (1.5 mol) of 1-chloro-2,2-dipropoxyethane, 450 ml of tert.-butyl methyl ether, 19.8 g (0.22 mol) of 2-methyl-2-butanol, 12 g of polyethylene glycol-1000 dimethyl ether and 300 g (4.5 mol) of technical grade potassium hydroxide (91%) were heated under reflux while stirring for six hours. The reaction was stopped, the salts filtered off and the product distilled. The conversion was 86.3% of theoretical. The main fraction contained 148.1 g (68.6% of theoretical) of pure 1,1-dipropoxyethene (b.p. 70° C. at 1.2 kPa) .
