245 mg of 2-butyl-4-(1-hydroxy-2-methylpropyl)-1-[(2'-methoxalylbiphenyl-4-yl)methyl]imidazole-5-carbonitrile [prepared as described in step (a) above] were subjected to hydrolysis using 6 ml of a 1N aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide in the same manner as described in Example 10(b), to give 187 mg of the title compound as a powder, at softening 144°-146° C.
