Into a solution of 2,4-bis(4-methoxybenzylthiomethyl)-4-butanolide (mixture of cis and trans forms, 2.40 g) in a mixture of methanol (30 ml) and THF (10 ml), ammonia gas was bubbled for 30 minutes under ice-cooling. The mixture was stirred overnight at room temperature and concentrated in vacuo. The oily residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography to give 2.36 g (94%) of the following compound.
