Procedure

1.20 g of 4-{2-(4-hexylphenyl)thiazole-5-yl}phenol was dissolved in 2 ml of pyridine and cooled on an ice bath to which common salt was added. To the solution, 0.9 ml of anhydrous trifluoromethylsulfonic acid was added, followed by stirring for 1 hour. After the reaction, the reaction mixture was poured into ice water and subjected to extraction with ethyl acetate. The resultant organic layer was acidified by diluted hydrochloric acid, washed with common salt water (or brine) and dried with anhydrous sodium sulfate, followed by distilling-off of the solvent to obtain 1.66 g of an objective product.
