A mixture of 4-Hydroxy-2-phenyl-5H-indolo[3,2-d]pyrimidine (800 mg), phosphorous oxychloride (10 mL), and dioxane (10 mL) was refluxed for 40 min. The reaction mixture was concentrated in vacuo and the residue was treated with saturated ammonium chloride and methylene chloride. After drying over magnesium sulfate the solvent was removed in vacuo and the residue was triturated with ether/hexane to afford 4-Chloro-2-phenyl-5H-indolo[3,2-d]pyrimidine (Compound 3) as a white solid.
