To a solution of 2,2,4,6,7-pentamethyl-3-phenyl-2,3-dihydro-1-benzofuran-5-amine (1.60 g, 5.69 mmol) and 4-methoxybenzoyl chloride (1.16 g, 6.82 mmol) in chloroform (20 ml) was added triethylamine (0.87 ml, 6.26 mmol) and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 30 minutes. The solvent was removed under reduced pressure. Water (30 ml) was added into the residue and the product was extracted twice with ethyl acetate. The combined organic layers were washed with 1N hydrochloric acid and an aqueous, saturated solution of sodium hydrogen carbonate, dried on magnesium sulfate, filtered, and then concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was crystallized from methanol to obtain 1.70 g (72% yield) of the title compound. Melting point: 190-192° C.
