To a solution of NaOH (1.4 mmol) in a 1:1 mixture of methanol:H2O (6 mL) was added 2-(1,3-dioxo-1,3-dihydro-isoindol-2-yl)-4-phenyl-thiophene-3-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (0.7 mmol, Example 1, Part C). The mixture was heated to reflux for 90 minutes, then diluted with water (12 mL), chilled in an ice bath, and acidified with concentrated HCl. The product that precipitated was collected by filtration, washed with water, and dried, affording the desired compound as a white solid in 92% yield.
