Procedure
To a stirred solution of 1-[4-(4-chloro-benzenesulfonyl)-4-(2,5-difluoro-phenyl)-cyclohexylmethanesulfonyl]-azetidin-3-one (Example 31) (58 mg, 0.11 mmol.) in tetrahydrofuran (5 mL) was added a solution of methyl magnesium bromide (3M in diethyl ether, 0.075 mL, 0.22 mmol.) and the mixture stirred at ambient temperature for 45 minutes. The reaction was quenched by the addition of saturated aqueous ammonium chloride (10 mL) and the mixture extracted with ethyl acetate (2×20 mL). The combined organic layers were washed with water (20 mL) and brine (20 mL), dried (MgSO4) and evaporated to leave a residue which was purified by column chromatography on silica, eluting with ethyl acetate:dichloromethane:iso-hexane (1:1:1), to afford the desired product (51 mg).
