A mixture of 3-(2-bromo-2-[1,2,4]triazol-1-yl-acetyl)-benzonitrile hydrobromide (1.848 g, 5.00 mmol), thiourea (0.46 g, 1.2 mol) in ethanol is heated to 95° C. for 8 h. The solvent is removed under vacuum to give a foam which is dissolved in 3M hydrochloric acid. The product is precipitated as a white powder by the addition of concentrated aqueous ammonia to pH11.
