Procedure

A solution of the ester from step 1 (1.0 g, 2.6 mmol) was dissolved in THF (5 mL) and methanol (5 mL) was treated with a 2.5 N NaOH solution (4.0 mL, 10.4 mmol). The resulting mixture was stirred at room temperature for 18 hours. The solvent was removed in vacuo, and the residue taken up in ethyl acetate and acidified with 3 N HCl. The solution was extracted with ethyl acetate. The extracts were combined, dried over MgSO4, filtered, and concentrated in vacuo yielding a yellow solid. Recrystallization from ethyl acetate-hexanes afforded the title compound as a pale yellow solid (0.42 g, 46%): mp 196.3–197.7° C. 1H NMR (CDCl3/300 MHz) d 7.65 (s, 1H), 7.40–7.23 (m, 6H), 7.15 (s, 1H), 5.63 (q, 1H, J=6.5 Hz), 3.35 (broad s, 1H). 19F NMR (CDCl3/282 MHz) d −78.71 (d, J=5.8 Hz). FABLRMS m/z 355 (M+H). ESHRMS m/z 353.0198 (M−H, Calc'd 353.0192).
