To a solution of tert-butyl 1-(4-chlorophenyl)-2-(2,4-dichlorophenyl)-5-cyano-1H-imidazole-4-carboxylate (2.57 gram, 5.73 mmol) in dichloromethane (40 mL) is added trifluoroacetic acid and the resulting solution is stirred at room temperature for 20 hours and concentrated in vacuo. The residue is crystallised from diisopropyl ether to give pure 1-(4-chlorophenyl)-5-cyano-2-(2,4-dichlorophenyl)-1H-imidazole-4-carboxylic acid (1.95 gram, 87% yield). Melting point: 200–202° C.
