A mixture of 2-(3-iodophenyl)-4-(pyridin-2-yl)-1,3-thiazole (1–30 mg, 0.36 mmol), zinc cyanide (117 mg, 1.0 mmol) and Pd(PPh3)4 (10 mg, 0.009 mmol) in N,N-dimethylformamide (2 mL) was heated overnight at 80° C. The mixture was cooled and diluted with toluene (5 mL). The organic solution was washed with 2N NH4OH (2×10 mL). The mixture was then extracted with ethyl acetate and the organic extract was washed with brine. The organic solution was dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated in vacuo. Silica gel chromatography afforded 28 mg (30%) of 2-(3-cyanophenyl)-4-(pyridin-2-yl)-1,3-thiazole: 1H-NMR (CDCl3), ppm: 8.65. (d, 1H), 8.38 (s, 1H), 8.25 (m, 2H), 8.15 (s, 1H), 7.85 (m, 1H), 7.72 (m, 1H), 7.6 (t, 1H), 7.28 (m, 1H). GC/EI-MS gave m/z 263 (M+).
