Procedure
Into a 100 ml flask were placed fluvastatin methyl ester (3.0 g), EtOH (7.5 ml) and a solution of NaOH (0.28 g) in water (0.75 ml). The mixture was heated to reflux for two h, propan-2-ol was added (58 ml) and the mixture was cooled to room temperature and stirred over night. The product was isolated by filtration under nitrogen, washed with propan-2-ol (50 ml) and dried at 50° C. in a vacuum oven for 24 h to obtain 1.92 g (62.8%) of fluvastatin sodium crystal Form IX.
