Procedure

Fluvastatin methyl ester (2.0 g) was added to a solution of NaOH (1 eq.) in EtOH (15 ml). The mixture was stirred at about 70° C. for 4 h (it became clear and turned to a slurry), after which the starting material was not detected by HPLC. Then, 40 ml of ethyl acetate was dripped into the mixture and it was cooled slowly to room temperature and stirred overnight. The product was isolated by filtration under nitrogen, washed with ethyl acetate (10 ml) and dried at 50° C. in a vacuum oven for 24 h to obtain fluvastatin sodium Form XXXVIII (1.78 g, 87.4%).
