Procedure

To a solution of 7-benzyl-3-ethoxycarbonyl-1-methyl-2-o-tolyl-4,5-dihydro-1H-pyrrolo[2,3-f]isoquinolin-7-ium; bromide XXIIIA (1.64 mmol) in dry DMSO (1 mL), 1M potassium tert-butoxide (11.5 mmol) in THF was added. The solution was bubbled with dry air overnight. Volatiles were removed, the residue was suspended in DCM, washed with water, dried (Na2SO4), filtered and the solvent evaporated. Chromatography on silica gel (eluant: DCM/MeOH 20:1) afforded the title compound. ESI (+) MS: m/z 347 (MH+). 1H NMR: 1.1 (t, J=7.1, 3H), 2.15 (s, 3H), 2.9 (m, 2H), 3.02 (m, 2H), 4.05 (q, J=7.1, 2H), 4.2 (s, 3H), 7.2-7.4 (m, 4H), 7.48 (d, J=5.1, 1H), 8.36 (d, J=5.1, 1H), 8.4 (s, 1H).
