A suspension of the product of Example 2C (7.26 g, 23.57 mmol), ammonium chloride (8.27 g, 155 mmol), and iron powder (8.11 g, 145 mmol) in methanol (188 mL) and water (94 mL) was stirred at reflux for 2 hours. The mixture was filtered while hot through celite®, and the filter cake was washed with hot methanol (200 mL). The filtrate was concentrated to an approximate volume of 100 mL and then extracted with ethyl acetate (400 mL). The organic layer was washed with water and saturated sodium chloride solution, dried (Na2SO4), filtered through celite® and concentrated in vacuo to afford the title compound (6.37 g, 97%). 1H NMR (300 MHz, DMSO-d6): δ 7.38 (m, 7 H), 7.22 (m, 2 H), 7.01 (dd, J=8.82, 2.94 Hz, 1 H), 6.76 (d, J=8.82 Hz, 1 H), 5.46 (s, 2 H), 4.98 (s, 2 H).
