Procedure
A solution of 4-[2-(2-naphthalenyloxy)ethoxy]-alpha-oxobenzeneacetyl chloride, derived from 4-[2-(2-naphthalenyloxy)ethoxy]-alpha-oxobenzeneacetic acid (0.312 g) in the previously described manner (Example 6), in dichloromethane was treated with a solution of N-methylhydroxylamine hydrochloride (0.094 g) in pyridine (1.5 mL). After the reaction solution was stirred at room temperature for 18 hours, it was concentated in vacuo and then diluted with water. The resulting fine yellow precipitate was filtered off, dried and crystallized from methanol-water to afford 0.129 g of N-hydroxy-N-methyl-4-[2-(2-naphthalenyloxy)ethoxy]-alpha-oxobenzeneacetamide, mp 161°-165° C.
