To a solution of 1.16 g (4.1 mmol) of 2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-7-trimethylsilylethynyl-chroman (Compound 43) in 3 ml of isopropanol was added 5 ml of ethanolic KOH solution. The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 24 hours and the alcohol was then removed under vacuum. The residue was extracted with 2×10 ml of ether and the combined ether extracts were washed with 15 ml of water and 20 ml of saturated NaCl solution and then dried (MgSO4). The solvent was removed in vacuo and the residue purified by Kugelrohr distillation to give the title compound as a white crystalline solid.
