Procedure

19.3 ml (0.0193 moles) of a 1N aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide were added to a solution of 5.05 g (0.0175 moles) of ethyl 2,4,5-trifluoro-3-trifluoromethoxybenzoate [(XXVIII), X=X'=F, R16 =C2H5O] [prepared as described in step (b) above] in 100 ml of ethanol, and the mixture was allowed to stand at room temperature for 2 hours. At the end of this time, 19.3 ml of 1N aqueous hydrochloric acid were added, and then the reaction mixture was concentrated by evaporation under reduced pressure. The residue was then extracted with ethyl acetate. The extract was washed with water, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, and evaporated to dryness under reduced pressure, to give 3.98 g of 2,4,5-trifluoro-3-trifluoromethoxybenzoic acid as a colorless powder.
