Procedure

Boron trifluoride etherate (1.15 g, 81 mmol) was added to a stirred solution of 1,2-ethanedithiol (0.34 g, 3.65 mmol) and (S)-2-acetoxy-4-oxobutanoic acid ethyl ester (0.46 g, 2.4 mmol) in dichloromethane (20 ml) at 0°. The mixture was stirred at room temperature overnight and ice/water added. The organic layer was separated, dried (MgSO4) and the solvent evaporated to give the sub-title compound (0.92 g).
