Procedure
A solution of 3-[4-(4-nitrophenoxy)phenyl]-1H-pyrazole (0.16 g, 0.57 mmol) in pyridine (12 mL) was treated with neat acetic anhydride (1.0 mL, 1.0 mmol) and allowed to stir at room temperature for 16 hours. The reaction was then diluted with ethyl acetate, washed several times with an aqueous 2N HCl solution, dried over sodium sulfate, and evaporated under reduced pressure. The crude product was purified by column chromatography, affording 116 mg (63%) of the title compound. TLC Rf 0.78 (70:30 hexane/ethyl acetate). 1H NMR (CDCl3): δ8.31 (d, J=3.0 Hz, 1H), 8.22 (d, J=9.3 Hz, 2H), 7.94 (d, J=8.7 Hz, 2H), 7.17 (d, J=9.0 Hz, 2H), 7.07 (d, J=9.3 Hz, 2H), 6.77 (d, J=3.0 Hz, 1H), 2.78 (s, 3H).
