To a solution of 2-bromo-1-(thiazol-2-yl)-ethanone (2.5 g; 12 mmol) in CH3CN (70 ml) was added imidazole (1.65 g; 24 mmol). After stirring at room temperature for 1 hour, the mixture was evaporated to dryness and partitioned between CH2Cl2 and water. The organics were washed with saturated NaCl and evaporated to give 2-(imidazol-1-yl)-1-(thiazol-2-yl)-ethanone as a brown solid (1.17 g; 50%).
