Procedure
55.4 g (0.2 mol) of ethyl 2-cyano-3,3-diphenylacrylate (Uvinul 3035), 62.5 g of menthol and 4 g of Na2CO3 were reacted with one another at 185-200° C. with distillative removal of the ethanol formed, assisted by a stream of nitrogen. After about 6 h, the reaction mixture was cooled and distilled under reduced pressure, giving 44 g (57%) of menthyl 2-cyano-3,3-diphenylacrylate [λmax=300 nm, E11=351].
