3-Acetyl-2,4-dimethyl-5-(4-pyridyl)-1H-pyrrole (800 mg, 3.74 mmol) was dissolved with THF (37 mL), acetic acid (45 mL) and water (37 mL). Ammonium cerium(IV) nitrate (8.38 g, 15.3 mmol) was added to the mixture at room temperature and stirred for 1.5 hours. The mixture was neutralized with 2 M aqueous NaOH solution and extracted with ethyl acetate (150 mL×3). The combined organic layers were washed with brine, dried over MgSO4, and evaporated in vacio. The residue was purified by flash chromatography eluting with ethyl acetate-hexane (2:1) to afford the title compound (190 mg, 22% yield) as a solid.
