Procedure
A mixture of 2-naphthaldehyde (6.00 g) and methyl (triphenyl-phosphoranylidene)acetate (13.0 g) in toluene (100 ml) was refluxed for 14 hours. After removal of the solvent, the residue was chromatographed on silica gel (hexane:ethyl acetate:CH2Cl2=4:1:4) followed by recrystallization from hexane-cyclohexane to give the titled compound (7.19 g) as a white solid.
